In those days RTR, and its "Vesti" news program in particular, contributed a lot to establishing democracy in Russia. At first RTR embraced two TV channels (national channel Russia and educational channel Russian Universities) and Radio Russia. During ten years rich in economic and political reforming in Russia RTR also met many changes .

1999 saw the creation of a Federal State Unitary Enterprise, the Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. It brought under one umbrella all Russian state broadcasting companies, including 92 regional broadcasters in all constituent parts of the Russian Federation.

The main federal TV channels of the RTR are "Russia" and "Kultura". "Radio Russia" is the biggest federal radio broadcaster. All regional public TV and radio broadcasters have been merged into RTR as subsidiaries.
RTR is an active member of the EBU and maintains close contacts with the leading world broadcasters and international institutions.

ORT is Russia's biggest broadcaster.

The ORT has been broadcasting on the 1st frequency channel since April 1995. ORT appeared as a successor to "Ostankino" TV and Radio Broadcasting Company, which had been broadcasting on this channel since 1991.

One of the most important reasons of creating of ORT was to bring the audience back to Channel I and to ensure viewer's loyalty. This goal was achieved in a brilliant way.

Today, ORT is the most popular television channel, which is proved by the data received from several sociological services using different methods of audience measuring. According to them the ORT's audience share is bigger in comparison with it's main competitors (28,6%).

ORT's programming is received on the territory where 99,8% of the country population resides, that is about 145 million people. Its greatly average broadcast volume reaches 20,14 hours. As ORT's programming is watched on the territory divided into 11 time zones, the company produces 5 parallel broadcast daily and airs them to various regions at the hours of most convenience to its viewers.
